Cristina wins silver in her first WSKA World Championship

Saturday 28 September 2013

The Liverpool Echo Arena was the setting for the WSKA World Shotokan Karate Championships 2013.  The squads from England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland were well supported by family, friends and karate-ka from across the UK.

The standard of the karate on display over the weekend from some of the world's best shotokan karate competitors was awesome.

For the Shotokan Karate Academy, we were extremely proud to support two of our club members, both competing on the world stage for the first time. These were: Patrick Agnah 4th Dan representing Ghana and Cristina Finta 2nd Dan representing England.

Both Cristina and Patrick performed impressively in the individual kata and kumite events but did not progress to the finals.

Cristina also participated in the womens' team kata, but this new team of Holly, Gemma and Cristina did not make the finals in an extremely strong field.

Cristina was also selected to the Senior England Women's Kumite team alongside Holly Sterling, Caroline Magrath and Rhianne Blundell. The team fought brilliantly, winning through to the finals. They faced the Hungarian team and it was a fantastic final. It was such a close match with a win apiece and a draw, but due to an ippon score by Hungary in their winning fight, the Hungarian team took the gold leaving our girls with the silver.

Full results of the championships can be found on the WSKA website and more details are on the KUGB website.
